Recently, 60 curators and scholars from 50 museums and universities across the country jointly issued the initiative on Museums actively participating in the construction of metaverse (hereinafter referred to as the initiative), calling on museums to grasp the strategic direction of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and new opportunities for industrial reform, give full play to their own advantages and actively participate in the construction of metaverse.

In recent years, major museums are exploring new ways of value transmission and inheritance of cultural relics and traditional culture in their collections to adapt to the digital era. More and more digital museums embrace traditional culture. Especially last year, with the cross-border explosion of the concept of “metaverse”, many museums also began to try to construct metaverse. How to better “move” the museum into metaverse? It has become a hot topic in the cultural and Expo circles.

Let the museum live in metaverse

On March 26, curators and scholars from museums and universities including Shanghai Museum, Nanjing Museum, Hubei Museum, Shanxi Museum, Guangdong Museum, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University jointly launched the initiative on Museums actively participating in the construction of metaverse, which attracted much attention.

In recent years, digital technology has made ICIF transcend time and space. With the rapid development of digital technology, museums are ushering in new outlets. Whether it is the increase in the number of visitors, the popularity of cultural and creative products, or the rebirth of ancient collections, narrowing the distance between the museum and the audience, the charm of digital technology is becoming more and more apparent, which also shows the achievements of some practices and attempts carried out by the museum in the digital field to a certain extent.

People in the industry believe that in fact, the museum has taken the pace of exploration in the construction of metaverse for a long time, including some museums have launched the “metaverse Tour” and “metaverse Exhibition” modes, built a fully immersive Interactive Digital Museum exhibition hall, and used virtual digital people as museum commentators. Among them, Shanghai History Museum launched Shanghai’s first digital twin museum system last year. Starting from the management needs of the museum and the visiting needs of the audience, it designed and constructed 7 plates and 14 digital scenes. In February this year, the new digital twin Museum navigation system of Shanghai History Museum, which is hosted by wechat applet platform and oriented to tourists, added new functions such as “metaverse exhibition viewing” mode to improve the real scene guidance function of tourists. Through the connection of exhibit QR code, it can realize the accurate navigation of various convenience facilities in the room.

It is worth noting that at present, many museums have also launched digital collections one after another, which has gradually become an upsurge. On October 29 last year, the digital collection of “Gou Jian sword, king of Yue”, one of the four “treasures of town and Museum” of Hubei Provincial Museum, was officially released. It is understood that this digital collection is the cross-border cooperation between Hubei Provincial Museum and ant chain. It is the first attempt in the new form of digital development of culture and Museum. A total of 10000 copies of this batch of digital collections were sold out in less than half a minute. Different from the cultural relics of offline museums, 3D digital collections not only restore the appearance of ancient relics, but also turn, zoom in and out on the mobile phone to see every detail of the cultural relics.

Share collections in the virtual world

Digital construction is a major trend in the development of museums, and the popularity of metaverse has also brought new development opportunities to museums. “Metaverse”, as a hot word, is an imagination of people’s future life state of virtual reality integration after the collective development of various software and hardware technologies. Traditional museums have the functions of collection, exhibition, academic research and public education. In recent years, with the development of the concept of public cultural services and cultural industry, the function of museums serving the public and promoting each other with the cultural industry has been emphasized. For museums, The current normalized metaverse concept can better promote the digitization of collections, the release of online exhibitions, public liberal education and better cooperation and exhibition planning with brother pavilions. ” Yuan yuan, an associate researcher of Shenzhen culture, radio, television, tourism and Sports Research Center, said in an interview with Shenzhen business daily.

Yuan Yuan believes that the concepts of digital twins, digital separation and virtual digital people allowed by the connotation of metaverse can be well applied and brought into play in various working functions of the museum. This is far beyond the concept of immersive interaction we have seen so far. “Metaverse” means that collections, pavilions and visitors can realize the “symbiosis” of virtual space-time with the help of collective digital technology. For example, collections can have fully three-dimensional digital twins, visitors can also enter the virtual exhibition hall in the form of digital separation, visit exhibitions with friends in different cities, and accept their own customized virtual digital human guide services. In short, technology brings Your imagination can be infinite. “

However, at present, the museum also needs to pay attention to some problems when participating in the construction of metaverse. Yuan Yuan pointed out that, for example, we should allocate our existing resources and carry out differentiated, division of labor and alliance cooperation. “Don’t start laying infrastructure from 0 to 1 in all pavilions. This cost will be very expensive, so the resources at the later content construction level will be reduced, and repeated construction will lead to unnecessary low-level resource utilization.” Yuan Yuan believes that if we can cooperate in the form of Museum alliance, it is equivalent to jointly building metaverse Museum platform system by raising funds, then we can share the infrastructure of underlying technology, digital collections and audience flow, so as to promote the business of the museum to a higher level and high-quality development stage.

Yuan Yuan believes that the initiative on the active participation of museums in the construction of metaverse not only shows the future vision of scholars and families in China’s cultural and Museum circles, but also provides more life-oriented application scenarios for metaverse, which is still somewhat abstract at present, and provides good enlightenment for other industries and industries to jointly carry out metaverse business development and resource expansion. In her opinion, if the museum participates in the construction of metaverse in the form of Museum alliance, it will be a pioneer move that conforms to the trend of the times and technical logic. This is equivalent to breaking the wall between different museums originally divided by physical space through the integrated digital technology provided by metaverse, making all museums open in the virtual world, and the digital collections of all cultural relics and treasures can be shared. In this way, more precious cultural relics that originally slept in the warehouse and need specific preservation conditions can be “resurfaced”, It is conducive to the convenience of visitors, better promote academic research and exchanges between museums, and promote high-level exhibition planning.
