Li Ming: the core elements of metaverse, including organization, identity, assets and activity technology, all need blockchain support

From March 23 to 24, “2022 Zhongguancun forum series activities – the 9th Annual Meeting of Zhongguancun Financial Technology Forum” was successfully held. Li Ming, director of blockchain Research Office of China Institute of electronic technology standardization, attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech on metaverse: Web3.0 digital ecology with blockchain as the core.

Li Ming pointed out that the information services promoted by the new generation of information technologies such as blockchain and the information consumption driven by the construction of new scenes by metaverse can jointly promote digital industrialization and industrial digitization, so as to promote the high-quality development of digital economy. The core elements of metaverse include organization, identity, assets and activities. At the same time, the four elements of metaverse need blockchain support from the technical point of view.

He said that metaverse can be divided into several systems at the same time: the technical system mainly emphasizes integration, the content system mainly emphasizes communication, and the economic system mainly emphasizes exchange, including the need for a unique identity, corresponding incentive mechanism, rights and interests and protection.

In Li Ming’s opinion, the development of metaverse brings both opportunities and challenges to economic and social development. Good afternoon, everyone. I’m Li Ming from China Institute of electronic technology standardization. Today, I’ll report metaverse: Web3.0 digital ecology with blockchain as the core.

First of all, digital economy has become an important strategic direction in China. From the 14th five year plan for national economic and social development of the people’s Republic of China and the outline of long-term objectives for 2035, we clearly see that we should accelerate the promotion of digital industrialization and the transformation of industrial digitization. In the 14th five year plan for the development of digital economy, it is also mentioned to vigorously promote digital transformation and accelerate the promotion of digital industrialization, And ministries and local governments have also issued relevant policies and requirements. Digital industrialization is to promote digital technology to form a certain scale industry, so as to support industrial digitization. Industrial digitization is to enable more enterprises to use digital technologies, including industrial Internet and financial technology, so as to promote the transformation of digital industrialization. In this process, the use of data is a very important work. What is the value of data? We say that data is very different from traditional elements. First, its marginal cost decreases. Second, the value of data is infinite. Third, data-driven services. We see many data-based services, such as credit investigation and user data to form credit investigation information, so as to provide some support for banks and other relevant departments.

The emergence of metaverse is a lot of technical preparation. First, the technical, financial and social attributes of blockchain have been gradually explored. The block linked data structure and distributed ledger of technical attributes provide support for trusted data, financial attributes provide support for digital assets, and social attributes provide support for distributed collaboration. Second, human-computer interaction technology has gradually matured. AR / VR, holographic image and brain computer interface take us into the digital world. Digital egg production and 3D printing map the activities of the digital world back to the physical world. Therefore, human-computer interaction not only enters the digital world, but also obtains results through digital world computing to support the actual application scenarios of the physical world. Third, the formation of a new generation of information technology integration architecture, including data collection by the Internet of things, data processing by big data, data utilization by artificial intelligence technology, data bearing and resource scheduling by cloud computing, communication support provided by 5g, and trusted and tamper proof mechanism provided by blockchain, combined with the development of human-computer interaction, constitute a new technology integration architecture for data, It will support the establishment of service system platform and support system, and the further development of digital technology operating system, and finally support the development of industrial metaverse and commercial metaverse. To sum up, digital economy includes digital industrialization and industrial digitization. Blockchain is a part of digital technology. Metaverse forms a large scene to stimulate information consumption, so as to promote industrial digitization. Just now we introduced the extension of metaverse, from high digital industrialization of digital economy to industrial digitization to information consumption to information service. What is metaverse? Here, we use the ontology method to start from four aspects: conceptualization, clarity, formalization and sharing. Firstly, conceptualization, we can divide metaverse into technology system, content system, economic system, collaboration system and governance system; For clarity, we should clearly put forward the concept expression of metaverse, because there are too many metaverse statements at present. Some people think that immersive games or 3D games are metaverse, while others think that AR and VR are metaverse. From the perspective of ontology, metaverse digital consensus ecological inheritance logical expression. Formalization mainly describes the technical implementation of a thing. Metaverse can be divided into five layers: meta space, meta scene, meta service, meta system and meta network. The essence of sharing is standardization. Here we preliminarily describe the system of metaverse standards, including basic classes, technology and platform classes, data and protocol classes, content and assets classes, application services classes, governance and supervision classes.

Metaverse’s core elements are organization, identity, assets and activities. From the technical point of view, the four elements all need blockchain support. First of all, the traditional Internet is very easy to form an organizational model, while Web3 0 is a shared network. In metaverse, an organizational form of user co governance can be formed. This organizational form needs the technical support of blockchain. Secondly, there must be digital identity in metaverse, which is prone to threats and privacy abuse in the traditional centralized authentication process. Thirdly, the scenario with assets as the core can form a sustainable industrial development, ecology and even economic system, and the financial attribute of the blockchain itself can better support the digital asset vouchers in metaverse, as well as the exchange and circulation of related assets. Finally, each individual will participate in many activities when entering metaverse, which will be implied into data, and the credibility, consensus and tamper proof of data also need the support of blockchain.

Metaverse is divided into technology, content, economy, cooperation and governance systems. The technology system is the integration of a new generation of information technology. The content system mainly emphasizes communication. It needs to build an open, creative and diverse content system to attract more regulators. The economic system mainly emphasizes exchange, including the need for a unique identity, corresponding incentive mechanism, rights and interests and protection. The collaboration system mainly emphasizes consensus. More parties must participate and ensure multi-party collaboration. In the process of collaboration, many parties reach a certain consensus on anything, so as to promote the progress of metaverse activities. The core of the governance system is to formulate rules, including a series of events such as copyright protection and scientific and technological ethics in metaverse environment, which need to be completed through the governance system.

The technology system can be divided into five layers: meta network, meta system, meta service, meta scene and meta space; Meta network includes a series of infrastructure such as communication, storage space and network; The meta system integrates a series of new generation information technologies such as big data, cloud computing, blockchain and artificial intelligence to jointly build a new technical system to support the normal operation of metaverse; Meta services include a series of service functions such as identity authentication, privacy computing and content management to support the application of metaverse in different scenarios; Meta scene can be in any corresponding scene, including industry, social, entertainment, culture, society, governance, financial services and a series of scenes; Meta space includes some devices for location perception, human-computer interaction, sensory touch, and related scene and environmental support. At the same time, we access some devices externally. The data flow between devices and the interaction between devices and metaverse also need corresponding technical support. In the future, metaverse must be diverse. Different enterprises have different metaverse, and the connection between different metaverse will form a multi metaverse, which needs the support of cross platform identity authentication, content interaction, asset circulation and other technologies.

Metaverse brings some benefits and challenges, which can be analyzed from five levels: technology, content, economy, cooperation and governance. Technically, metaverse needs the support of a new generation of information technology integration, but now a single technology iteration is not enough. There is room for the development of new generation information technologies, including blockchain, artificial intelligence and big data. At the same time, the new generation of technology integration has not been started, and there is little successful experience in the construction of real metaverse system. This is also an opportunity. It is the big scene of metaverse that can force the integration and improvement of these technologies, and promote the basic sciences such as information technology, quantum computing, life science and mathematics.

From the perspective of content, the content copyright boundary in metaverse has been greatly expanded, but the awareness of copyright protection is also very weak. At the same time, the content is relatively single and the content life cycle is not perfect. Its opportunities can promote the process of digital transformation and create and release the value of digital content space.

Economically, many people use metaverse for speculation and even illegal fund-raising for crime. However, metaverse’s economic system is also an opportunity to establish a new way of resource allocation, expand consumption space on the premise of compliance, so as to reduce the marginal cost of market and production operation, expand the scale of digital economy and assets, and form a new business form.

In terms of cooperation, the current form of distributed cooperation organization is immature, the cost of cooperation is relatively high and the efficiency is relatively low. But it is also an opportunity. Innovative collaboration in metaverse space can change the traditional collaboration mode.

In terms of governance, including some values, scientific and technological ethics, organizational governance, financial supervision, content protection, online rights and interests, etc. However, if we make good use of metaverse’s related technologies, we can also increase the means of social governance and improve the effectiveness of social governance. Because everyone enters metaverse, regulators can also enter metaverse synchronously, which has higher effectiveness than governance in the physical environment.

We have several thoughts on the emergence and development of metaverse. First, unify the industrial consensus. At present, there are too many metaverse statements, which are narrative descriptions and popular science statements. To truly form an industry, we must have key technology research, theoretical research and standardization research, so we must first unify the industrial consensus.

Second, explore the method of technology integration to solve the problems of distributed identity authentication, cross chain ecological interconnection, digital asset circulation, digital content governance focus and so on. If these problems are not paid attention to, they will hinder the innovation of metaverse.

Third, innovate application scenarios and business models, promote application innovation in the fields of intelligent manufacturing, information consumption, smart city and cultural tourism in the digital environment, use new technologies to upgrade traditional industrial infrastructure, and establish innovative business ecosystems such as industrial metaverse, urban metaverse and financial metaverse.

Fourth, study and judge the risks related to privacy protection, technology discrimination, algorithm kidnapping and illegal fund-raising, and formulate measures such as financial service management to protect users’ online rights and interests.
