However, at the “global 6G Technology Conference” held today, Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering and chairman of the future mobile communication forum, said that metaverse is difficult to become the fulcrum of 6G, at least not the rigid demand of 6G.

Wu Hequan pointed out that metaverse loads the virtual space extended by human imagination into the real space, the digital twin maps the real space into the virtual space, and metaverse loads from the imaginary virtual space into the real space. Metaverse blurs the boundary between the virtual world and the real world. In a narrow sense, metaverse is a technology upgrade based on AR / VR / MR, integrating user avatars, content production, social interaction, online games, virtual currency payment and other cyberspace. In fact, the word “metaverse” is a business symbol and a virtual space technology. Its own technology has no new technology, but 5g, IP, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, virtual world, blockchain, virtual currency, Internet of things, robot and human-computer interaction.

According to Wu Hequan, metaverse needs 6G. This is because if the holographic display is used for real-time interaction, the peak throughput may reach 150gbps / s. even if the compression is 100 times, the average throughput will reach 1.5gbps/s. Moreover, the user is in omni-directional and multi angle holographic interaction and may carry thousands of concurrent data streams at the same time. Therefore, the total throughput of the user may reach TBPs / s, and even the delay required for interaction should be less than 1ms, and the user experience rate should be greater than 10 G, In this case, 5g cannot be supported now, and 6G may be needed.

Conversely, does 6G need metaverse? Wu Hequan believes that metaverse is difficult to become the fulcrum of 6G. It can also be used in the development of digital tourism, interactive games, and other sensory applications (for the future). However, the current business model of metaverse has not changed compared with social media and AR / VR, and it is a niche market, at least not the rigid demand of 6G.
