6G will be commercially available in 2030, and “metaverse” will help accelerate its landing

Stepping on the development rhythm of “using generation, building generation and R & D generation”, 6G “stands” at the key node of development. On March 22, the second “global 6G Technology Conference” originally planned to be held in Nanjing opened online, and clearer and targeted promotion ideas gradually became clear in the discussions of various guests. The industry generally predicts that 6G will be commercially available around 2030. At that time, based on 5g, 6G will further expand from serving people, people and things to supporting the efficient interconnection of agents, realize the transition from the interconnection of all things to the smart alliance of all things, and finally help human society realize the beautiful vision of “smart alliance of all things and digital twin”.

China has always attached great importance to 6G development. The 14th five year plan for the development of digital economy released in January this year proposed that the sixth generation mobile communication (6g) network technology reserves should be prospectively laid out, 6G technology R & D support should be strengthened, and 6G international standardization should be actively promoted. In 2019, the national 6G technology R & D promotion working group, the overall expert group and imt2030 (6g) promotion group were successively established, and all work of 6G was solidly promoted and made positive progress. Last year, as the first year of metaverse, it accelerated the landing and popularization of 6G, because the grand world of metaverse requires not only XR and other intelligent devices, but also blockchain and NFT encryption protocols, all of which should take 6G as the infrastructure.

“6G will move towards a ubiquitous smart Jane network with full combination of people, machines, things and spirits, virtual combination and emerging wisdom.” Referring to the vision and technical needs of 6G, Zhang Ping, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering and professor of Beijing University of Posts and telecommunications, put forward the concept of “spirit”. He said that the evolution logic from 1g to 6G is developed in a “line plane body”. What 1g to 4G pursues is simply the communication rate and “line”; 5g adds reliability and time delay, which is “face”; 6G may become a “body” in the future, but this “body” is not a simple expansion, but the product of intelligent intelligence. Therefore, the development of 6G is not only to improve the communication rate and expand the communication space, but also to improve the communication intelligence and study the new system of the relationship between intelligence, communication and human future.

Zhang Ping said that the vision of 6G evolution is digital twinning and ubiquitous wisdom, in which there is the infiltration, mapping and interaction between the physical world and the digital world, which reflects a “spiritual” relationship. “Mr. Qian Xuesen once proposed the concept of ‘spiritual realm’, which I simplified to ‘spirit’. Whether the future development of 6G will form a new relationship needs to be explored.” Zhang Ping believes that the typical application of 6G in the future will be immersive, intelligent and global. In terms of technology development, in addition to enhancing traditional technologies, we should further carry out innovative technology research, including AI assisted signal processing, quantum communication enabling 6G, communication perception integration, intelligent reflector and other technologies, “Compared with 5g, 6G communication index will be improved by 10-100 times, and centimeter level high-precision positioning will be realized. It will effectively support digital twinning, and also provide endogenous independent optimization for smart Jane networks in the future.”

6G is moving forward according to the established pace from demand to standard. According to Hong Wei, a professor at the school of information science and engineering of Southeast University, 6G technology evolution should be unswerving and non-stop. The demand may lag, but will not be absent. Metaverse may devour most of the capabilities that 6G can improve. “Of course, the most revolutionary progress will be the integration of LEO satellite network and ground post 5g network.” Hong Wei said that from the development history of mobile communication, 1g to 5g are quasi two-dimensional wireless communication networks deployed on land, but only 29% of the earth’s surface is land. 6G will produce and use many innovative technologies, but the most revolutionary progress will be the integration of LEO satellite networks and ground-based post 5g networks. For the first time, mankind will realize the full coverage of wireless communication network on the whole earth surface, near space and even part of outer space, so as to truly realize the ubiquitous information interconnection.

Because it is everywhere, 6G involves a wide range of fields and technologies. You Xiaohu, deputy director and chief scientist of Zijinshan laboratory and professor of Southeast University, believes that the combination of 6G oriented technologies such as the integration of space and space, millimeter wave terahertz and 5g technology will make 5g investment more effective and 6G development more practical. It is particularly important to establish a talent team with multi-level and multi-disciplinary integration.

In the era of digital economy, mobile communication network has become the key information infrastructure for building social economy. In the initial discussion of 6G vision, needs and key technologies around the world, security, flexibility and sustainability have received extraordinary attention. “Facing the world of man-machine and object ternary integration, 6G needs to make new expansion on the connotation and extension of mobile communication network security. On the basis of paying attention to the confidentiality, integrity, availability and privacy protection of traditional information security, it also needs to pay special attention to the generalized functional security of 6G network.” Wu Jiangxing, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, said that as an important supporting technology for intelligent network infrastructure after 2030, the traditional path of pursuing the leap of single technical indicators such as coverage, bandwidth and delay is no longer suitable. 6G must explore and open up a new paradigm of multi-objective sustainable and coordinated development such as technical performance, cost investment, energy consumption, safety, reliability and sustainable efficiency.
