A number of enterprises released the post demand of “meta skills”, and the high salary made job seekers excited——
“Metaverse” recruitment is heating up. Is it really seeking talent or rubbing heat
At present, it is the golden period of recruitment in spring. The recruitment in the name of “metaverse” is becoming more and more popular, and many posts offer high salaries. Insiders pointed out that the demand description of some “metaverse” jobs is vague, and some enterprises “rub the heat” with high salary as a gimmick. The development of “metaverse” is still in its early stage, and the real demand for talents has not yet seen explosive growth. Workers should not only seize opportunities, but also make careful judgments when choosing jobs.
“The ultimate future of the Internet”, “the biggest outlet in the next 10 years”… 2021 is known as the “first year of metaverse”. At present, it is the golden period of recruitment in spring, and the recruitment in the name of “metaverse” is becoming more and more popular.
The reporter found that from the infrastructure fields such as VR / AR, blockchain and Internet of things to the content ecological fields such as 3D modeling, technical art and virtual design, all kinds of enterprises give a large number of subdivided posts and offer olive branches to talents with “meta skills”, with an annual salary of up to one million yuan.
Enterprises offer high salaries to recruit
After the Spring Festival holiday, art designer Zhang Feng was surprised when he opened his mailbox.
“In more than ten days, the headhunter recommended me six job opportunities, all from the newly established ‘metaverse’ game team.” He was flattered by this.
In fact, although it has attracted much attention and expectation, there is no recognized definition of “metaverse” so far.
Pan Helin, CO director and researcher of digital economy and financial innovation research center of International United Business School of Zhejiang University, believes that “metaverse” can be understood as a virtual world parallel to the real world. The two are closely integrated in economic, social and identity systems. People have their own virtual avatars in metaverse, which can value digital assets.
Pan Helin analyzed that “metaverse” itself is not a new technology, but the extension, interaction and integration of digital twins, blockchain, artificial intelligence and other technologies. It is a breakthrough in known fields. Practitioners in these fields are talents needed for the development of “metaverse” in the future.
Shen Xiaofei, a senior Internet headhunter, told reporters that it is generally believed in the industry that games and social networking are expected to become the first landing scene of “metaverse”. At present, the enterprises with the greatest demand for talents are also those in these two tracks.
In a well-known recruitment platform, the reporter typed “metaverse” to search and found more than 260 relevant positions.
From the perspective of the publishing body, most of them are indeed game and social short video companies, as well as e-commerce, education and film and television companies that are relatively closely combined with “metaverse”. From the perspective of post setting, there are most technical posts, as well as conventional posts such as product, operation and market.
In terms of salary, technical talents are obviously more valuable. No matter large or small enterprises, the monthly salary is mostly more than 20000 yuan.
The reporter saw that a game company recruits U3D client development engineers with a monthly salary of 30000 ~ 50000 yuan. It only needs “Bachelor degree or above and more than two years of working experience in large-scale game online projects”. The post of VR principal recruited by another enterprise requires “more than 5 years of experience in head game project management”, with a monthly salary of 60000-80000 yuan. With the promised salary of 18 and stock options, the annual salary has exceeded one million yuan.
Some job gimmicks are more than substance
In the face of the influx of job invitations, Zhang Feng, who didn’t plan to change jobs, was a little excited. “Looking for my position, there are concept original paintings and 3D character designers, which are familiar directions, and the salary increase is about 30%.”
But after carefully studying and communicating with the headhunter, Zhang Feng felt worried and confused: “the job description is no different from the conventional game projects. The templates used are almost the same, but it is covered with the shell of ‘metaverse’. The prospect of the project described by the headhunter is very tempting, but I can’t tell what to do in the end.”
Shen Xiaofei also felt the same in his work: “as an emerging industry, metaverse has no real practitioners. Enterprises cross the river by feeling the stone, either saving their own teams or digging core technicians from traditional industries.” In his opinion, such talents have always been in short supply, and it is not surprising to offer high salaries.
“At present, there has been no explosive growth in talent demand, and the salary increase is also within a reasonable range. It is only a continuation of the high salary in the Internet industry.” As a senior hr of an Internet company, Sun Ping (pseudonym) told reporters that recruitment is indeed increasing, but it is not as hot as rumored, and many enterprises are still waiting and watching. The reason why it will create an atmosphere of “people grabbing war” is that in addition to the barbaric growth brought about by the initial opening of the industry, there are also some companies hyping “rub hot spots”.
A recruitment advertisement with an annual salary of one million has entered the reporter’s vision.
On a job search software, a listed company released the recruitment information of “metaverse partner”, “metaverse talent (overseas returnees)” and “metaverse talent (graduates)”. The annual salary range given is 500000 yuan to 1 million yuan. It is required to “major in computer and software engineering, bachelor degree or above”, Most of the job responsibilities are “to formulate and complete the metaverse technology line in combination with the company’s product characteristics and technical advantages, and lead the team to carry out in-depth technology development and the optimization of metaverse related underlying technologies, core applications and 3D engines”.
Although it seems to be a big talent, the reporter found that as a company mainly engaged in RF products of mobile communication base stations, the company has successively set foot in popular fields such as graphene, polymer materials and OLED, and most of them have failed. Enterprise survey data show that the company lost more than 70 million yuan in the first three quarters of 2021.
Workers should be cautious in choosing jobs
The Bloomberg industry research report predicts that the “metaverse” related economy will reach a market size of US $800 billion in 2024.
Pan Helin said that the deep reason for the rise of “metaverse” is that the development of the Internet has entered a bottleneck period, and the space for traffic growth has peaked. The major giants are eager to break the restrictions and boost the mobile Internet into the next incremental market.
Sun Ping agrees with this. He feels that in the long run, “metaverse” undoubtedly represents a development trend and will create certain jobs. However, when this vision will come, there are uncertainties at the technical and content levels.
So, facing the empty “metaverse”, how should workers judge when choosing a job?
Pan Helin believes that, “At this stage, the demand for technical talents in this industry is far greater than that of content talents. If workers have excellent technical ability, they can try. For non-technical talents, although the UGC (user original content) advocated by metaverse will reduce the threshold of content production, its development is still relatively backward, so it may not be a good choice to set foot in ‘metaverse’ now.”
Sun Ping suggested that workers should plan according to their own actual situation on the premise of recognizing the market situation, and should not blindly change the runway just because of the popularity of “metaverse”. In addition to considering salary, we should pay more attention to whether the post portrait is clear, whether the enterprise has done relevant projects and performance. For companies that have passed the market test, the project “viability” will be higher.
