As one of the most important events in the global mobile communication industry, 2022 World Mobile communication conference closed at Barcelona Convention and Exhibition Center, Spain, on March 3.

The four-day conference focused on six themes: 5g, cloud network, artificial intelligence, financial technology, Internet of all things and emerging technology, aiming to “connect and release infinite possibilities”. In the “hot search” list of the conference, 5g, Internet of things and other technologies continue to occupy an important position, and “metaverse”, which made its debut on a large scale, has become the focus of discussion. Products and designs born around the concept of “metaverse” can be seen everywhere, including the great creation of industry leaders and the ingenious ideas of start-ups.

The rise of “Yuanjie”

Accelerate the formation of a new space for human development

“Metaverse” is one of the well deserved hot words of this conference. Many of the long lines in the exhibition hall are related to “metaverse” exhibits and experience projects. This grand event in the mobile communication industry provides a great window for people to taste “metaverse”.

Some “metaverse” pathfinders focus on breaking through time and space to enable people to realize “impossible” interaction in the real world, such as virtual meeting and conversation with people on the other side of the world, or “close contact” with favorite stars anytime, anywhere.

ADA Bertrand, an employee of SK Telecom’s booth in Korea, is responsible for introducing the “metaverse” platform “ifland” to an endless stream of visitors, which is also one of the most popular experience projects of this conference. Wearing VR glasses, people can “visit” the scene of the star concert, dance with various virtual characters around them, and choose any perspective to watch the concert, which has a strong sense of experience. “For me, ‘metaverse’ is a place where you can achieve things you can’t do in the real world.” Bertrand said.

There are also some “metaverse” related applications that focus on building platforms for more individuals and enterprises to enrich “metaverse” in an open source manner.

Futura space, an immersive experience creative studio from Barcelona, brought a new “metaverse” creator this time. Patricia M. Val, executive producer of the company, introduced that this is an open source design software, and users can build their own small “metaverse” through templates in a few minutes.

Val said that although many enterprises are trying to seize the highland of “metaverse” and become the only “metaverse” platform in a certain field, in order to realize this future, they also need various types of tools and services so that everyone can easily access “metaverse”.

During the conference, Spanish Telecom announced that it had reached a cooperation with American technology giant “Yuan” to launch a solicitation order to global “metaverse” start-ups, provide technical and infrastructure support for these start-ups, and will build a “metaverse” innovation center.

“Today, we are at the beginning of the next transition because we are building for metaverse.” “Yuan” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement before the conference, “To create a real sense of existence in the virtual world provided by smart glasses and virtual reality helmets, we need to make unprecedented progress in connectivity… And new types of networks will be needed, such as remote rendering on edge computing cloud and large-scale immersive video streaming.”

“Metaverse is still just a concept. Just like when the Internet, digital trading and other forms have just been born, people have created various tools for it to enable small and medium-sized enterprises to connect with the global economy. This is exactly what we hope to do in the era of metaverse.” Val said.

Javier Campos, chief technology officer and chief information officer of Aumenta solutions, an augmented reality solutions company, believes that whether “metaverse” can be realized in the future depends on the speed, quality and coverage of network connection, which is also consistent with the theme of “unlimited possibility of connection release” of this conference.

“Everything has just begun.” Jose Maria Alvarez Paret, chairman of Spanish Telecom, said in a keynote speech at the conference that processing capacity and storage capacity are growing exponentially and transferred to the cloud, and virtual reality and augmented reality are changing the way we experience everything. “Metaverse and Web 3.0 have almost created a new immersive world for us and have brought shocking subversion.” He said.

In his keynote speech, Yang Jie, chairman of China Mobile, also described such a vision for the future: with the expansion of connected objects and the upgrading of infrastructure, “metaverse” and other new formats and models continue to emerge, and a new space for human development that reflects the digital and real world is accelerating.

Digital 2022 World Mobile Communication Conference

More than 61000 people from nearly 200 countries participated in the four-day conference, exceeding the expected 40000 to 60000, according to data released by the Global Association for mobile communication systems, the organizer of the conference; More than 1900 enterprises, including exhibitors and sponsors, attended the conference; More than 1000 people spoke at the conference.

What is metaverse? How far is it from us?

What is “metaverse”

“Metaverse” comes from the two concepts of “metaverse” and “Avatar” mentioned in the 1992 foreign science fiction work avalanche.

In “metaverse”, everyone has his own “digital Avatar”.

“Metaverse” mainly has three core technologies

1. Extended reality technology

AR can’t provide immersive experience, including problems that AR can’t solve.

2. Digital twins

It can mirror the real world into the virtual world.

This also means that many virtual avatars can be seen in metaverse.

3. Build an economic system with blockchain

In metaverse, you can not only spend money, but also make money.

In this way, a set of economic system is also formed in the virtual world.

The market scale is expected to reach 800 billion US dollars in 2024

In January this year, the South Korean government announced a long-term roadmap to promote the development of metaverse industry, with the goal of becoming the fifth largest metaverse market in the world within five years. According to the plan, South Korea will cultivate at least 220 metaverse enterprises with a turnover of more than 5 billion won (about 26.64 million yuan), and establish the “metaverse College” this year. In fact, as early as last November, the city government of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, announced that it would build a metaverse platform to provide public services to citizens. According to the plan, the platform will be completed by the end of this year at the latest.

Many internationally renowned consulting companies are optimistic about the future of metaverse. For example, the Bloomberg industry research report predicts that metaverse will reach US $800 billion in 2024, and PwC predicts that metaverse will reach US $1.5 trillion in 2030. Although the prospect is attractive, most respondents believe that the metaverse industry as a whole is still in its early stage. From the current situation of computing power conditions, network technology and expanded reality, the industry still needs 10 to 20 years of development.

Technology giants enter the race

The industry generally believes that 2021 is the “first year of ‘metaverse”. Facebook, Microsoft, NVIDIA and other technology companies have laid out their plans one after another.

● in May 2021, Microsoft CEO Satya NADELLA said that the company was trying to build an “enterprise metaverse”.

● in August 2021, NVIDIA, a manufacturer of image processing and artificial intelligence chips, announced the launch of the world’s first simulation and collaboration platform to provide a foundation for metaverse.

● in October 2021, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company was renamed “Yuan” to focus on metaverse business. When explaining why the company changed its name, Zuckerberg intuitively demonstrated the future of metaverse with a video: it can create a virtual “home”, invite familiar people to socialize, put on devices, enter a virtual workspace, work with colleagues, and even create a virtual world, In recent years, the company has invested heavily in virtual reality and augmented reality technology to develop hardware products such as virtual reality headphones, augmented reality glasses and watches.

Intelligent robot becomes a bright spot

At the 2022 World Mobile Communication Conference, many enterprises released a series of innovative products, and intelligent robots such as robot waiter and bionic quadruped robot have also become a highlight of the exhibition.

Cyberdog bionic quadruped robot

Xiaomi brought the cyberdog (iron egg) bionic quadruped robot launched last year. Cyberdog is avant-garde in shape and equipped with advanced sensors. It can interact with people, say hello, raise its claws, shake hands with its owner, and turn over. Although cyberdog looks cool, it is agile and cute when interacting with people, which attracted attention at the exhibition site.

Automatic disinfection robot

The automatic disinfection robot developed by KT Company of South Korea made its public debut for the first time. According to KT Company, the robot can run continuously for 24 hours, monitor air quality in real time through artificial intelligence (AI) technology, disinfect bacteria and viruses in the air with air plasma, and disinfect the floor with ultraviolet light.

Bar robot waiter

In the Spanish Telecom exhibition area, the bar robot waiter driven by 5g technology is quite eye-catching. It is reported that this robot, developed by Spanish Marco robot company, has a human like head and torso and two mechanical arms. It can mix cocktails, speak more than a dozen languages, and recognize regular customers through face recognition. Customers can order wine, cocktails and other drinks with just a few clicks on the touch screen. This “zero contact” service can make customers eat more at ease.
